Hi, I’m Adam from Massey Financial Advice and I’m here to tell you that is no longer true.  In the past, sure, most financial advisers were tied to an institution such as a bank, an insurance company, an investment manager or a superannuation fund and basically, the financial advisers were the distribution arm for those institutions. This meant there was a big focus on selling product.  There’s still some financial advisers who work that way, but there are a lot of advisers who work differently.  Basically, the other financial advisers will look at your whole situation, work out what you’re trying to achieve and try to help you on your journey to achieve that.

These financial advisers will work with you to find out what your dreams are, turn them into a goal, which is a dream with a date, and then work with you over time to help you achieve that goal.  It does take some work on your part, but it really is worthwhile.

A good financial adviser can also identify opportunities that you might have missed or not be aware of because they’re looking at financial things all day every day, and they can see opportunities where you might not.  They can piece together different elements and see how certain decisions will effect other elements, plus come up with alternatives and point out any risks or disadvantages of each course of action.  Most of the modern style of financial adviser would be a fee for service rather than charging a percent of the assets you invest with them, so it doesn’t really matter how much money you have to invest.  The adviser could still help you with your structuring and opportunities regardless of how much money you have to invest.  The modern financial adviser is looking for a long-term valuable relationship where they can really help you on your journey through life.
